Make your own 'no dig' veggie garden
As the weather cools its a great time of the year for the family to get together and spend some time in the garden. Getting kids involved in growing their own veggies is such a healthy activity and will teach them where the produce on our supermarket shelves comes from. We adults will probably benefit from the time out to reconnect with nature and some good home grown nutrition.
I recently heard a story about an old African agronomist who highlighted that the success of growing vegetables depended largely on good soil preparation. That’s where Rocky Point Mulching steps in. The combination of our Lucerne Mulch, Sugar Cane Mulch, Cow Manure and Soil Improver will assist any home gardener grow a thriving organic veggie garden.
A great idea this summer is the ‘no dig’ veggie garden. It is a simple process of layering the 4 products we have mentioned to raise the garden bed up and improve the overall soil composition.
Steps to make your own 'no dig' veggie garden:
1. Put a very thick layer of RPM’s Sugarcane Mulch over your veggie plot (approx100mm)
2. Cover with a good layer of RPM’s composted Cow Manure (approx 30mm)
3. Cover that with a good layer of RPM’s Lucerne Mulch (approx 50mm)
4. Finally, finish off by covering with a generous layer of RPM’s Organic Soil Improver (approx 50mm)
‘Water in’ ingredients after each step to help improve the moisture level ready for planting and improve the break down of the mulches. If your customer is growing vegetables from seeds then we recommend using some of RPM’s Premium Potting Mix as a top layer (another 30mm) (step 5) to assist with germination.
There are many variations to the above method with opportunity for numerous add on sales (Raised gardens beds, organic & liquid fertilisers, weed mating, seeds, punnets etc). This method is particularly good in areas with poor soil types and will leave the area with large amounts of useable, nutrient rich organic matter.
